At home, instead of Mom’s Mysore Pak, Badam Halwa and Ribbon Pakoda, we now have “Diwali Package” comprising both Sweets and Savories available as package deals of various combinations and volumes. These are prepared at home by Homemakers on H4 visa or senior citizens living with their children and desirous of using their culinary talent to make some money on the side. For “newly arrived in US” families, the various videos and posts courtesy of social media and YouTube, have replaced the long-distance calls to Moms/Moms-in-law for recipe guidance. The result being many successful and not so successful creation of traditional Diwali sweets like laddoos, barfis, halwas, etc. at home. Indian Diwali in the US will never compare to what happens back in India. But we are not complaining. We are in a happy place, having successfully transplanted our cultural traditions of Diwali here in US–with an American twist !
